The loyalty program is appraised at $22 billion. The airline that owns it is worth $13 billion. I run the part that's worth more than the planes, and I print the money myself.
In June 2020, United Airlines raised $6.8 billion in debt secured not by its aircraft, not by its routes, not by its gates, but by MileagePlus, its frequent-flyer program. The appraisal attached to that financing valued the program at roughly $22 billion. United’s entire market capitalization at the time was about $13 billion. The miles were officially worth more than the airline. The same filing disclosed that 57% of all MileagePlus miles are earned through credit cards, not flying.
Since then: United deleted its award charts (2019) and moved to dynamic pricing, where a mile is worth whatever United says it’s worth at the moment you try to spend it. On April 2, 2026, general members’ earn rate was cut from 5 miles per dollar to 3, and basic economy stopped earning miles at all, unless you hold the credit card. The Department of Transportation opened an inquiry into frequent-flyer devaluation in September 2024. It is still open. The devaluations did not stop.
One day after the earn cut, on April 3, United became the first U.S. airline to charge a seat-selection fee in business class. Two products, two floors of the same building, one quarter.
